Summer at the Point: A day made by young people, for young people Under blue skies and summer heat, more than 300 young people and community members gathered at Point Cook for Summer at the Point last Friday. It was a vibrant celebration of music, sport, creativity and connection! The day kicked off at 11am with a Welcome to Country by local Elder Colin Hunter Jnr Jnr, followed by a powerful didgeridoo performance, setting the tone for a day grounded in respect, culture and community. From there, the energy grew. Young DJ’s ENIT and Tobe kept the hip-hop beats flowing throughout the afternoon, while the basketball courts came alive thanks to our friends at Helping Hoops. Nearby, James Archer led hands-on street art and graffiti workshops, giving young people the chance to express themselves creatively and contribute to artwork on the day. What made Summer at the Point truly special was that it was co-designed with young people through our Youth Advisory Group. From activities and music to the overall vibe, the event reflected what young people told us they wanted – fun, welcoming, creative and judgement-free. YAG members were on the ground all day, connecting with peers, sharing snacks (slurpees and fairyfloss) and sparking conversations with young people about what matters to them. We were proud to be joined by local services and partners including Wyndham Street Surfer Bus, AMES Australia, Centre for Multicultural Youth, Foresite, Wyndham Community and Education Centre and Big Group Hug, helping to raise awareness of the support services available to young people in Point Cook. Between basketball games, graffiti workshops and hip-hop beats, Summer at the Point created more than just a fun afternoon. It welcomed visibility, connection and access points to support. Young people were able to learn about Youth Projects and other local support services in a relaxed, informal way, in a space designed with them in mind. We’re incredibly grateful to Bendigo Community Bank (Altona and Laverton Branch) whose support made this event possible, and to everyone who helped bring the day to life. Summer at the Point showed what’s possible when young people are listened to, trusted and given the space to lead! Manage Cookie Preferences
