We are a large-scale construction company who are proud to build thousands of new apartments each year.
But whilst we go to work in the city each day building new places for people to live, we can’t ignore the fact that for many in the community having a place to call home is out of reach.” Michael Argyrou, Hickory Managing Director
Hickory has donated construction services to create an upgraded facility for homeless charity Youth Projects. Located in Melbourne’s iconic, graffiti-covered Hosier Lane, Youth Projects provide essential services for Melbourne homeless and disadvantaged.
Youth Projects’ Chair Melanie Raymond said the redevelopment has transformed the “Living Room” area and made a tangible difference to the lives of Melbourne’s homeless.
“This redevelopment has allowed us to meet the needs of Melbourne’s homeless, from the simple things like a shower or laundry facilities, to the complex such as access to physical and mental health care and drug rehabilitation facilities,” she said.
Melanie said the Living Room had become run-down and lacks the space to accommodate the vast amount of people who need help.
“The episodes of care for Melbourne’s homeless we deliver have risen sharply each year for five years na row and we have struggled to provide this care with limited resources and run-down facilities.”
The redevelopment has taken into consideration the services that the homeless have said will make the most difference to them including a functioning kitchen to learn to prepare healthy food, new bathroom and laundry facilities, access to computers, lockers to store their belongings and areas for artistic expression, relaxing and talking.
The Hickory team managing this project comprised our young building graduates stepping up to take leading roles on the Hosier Lane upgrade.
